Distributing your applications

Xtra distribution

There are a number of ways the Xtra can be distributed with your projector or packaged application.

You can place the Xtra in a folder called ‘Xtras’ in the same folder as your projector/application. This is the recommended method, particularly if your application will run from a slow medium such as CD-ROM. This method will provide the fastest loading application, because the Xtra will not need to be extracted every time your application runs.

In Director, you can embed the Xtra into the projector. To embed the xtra, you need to manually add it to the list of Xtras to be embedded. Choose the Modify -> Movie -> Xtras menu. A dialog box will appear. Click the ‘Add’ button, and select ‘Buddy API Xtra’. Make sure that the Include in projector option is checked.

Making cross platform projectors under Director 11

Using Director 11, it is possible to make Mac projectors under Windows, and vice versa.

To make a OSX projector from Windows, place the 'Buddy API Xtra.cpio' file from the Macintosh Buddy API 4 download into the Director\Configuration\Cross Platform Resources\Macintosh\Xtras folder. Open the xtrainfo.txt file in the Director\Configuration folder and add this line to the bottom of the file:

[#namePPC:"Buddy API Xtra", #nameW32:"Buddy API Xtra.x32"]

To make a Windows projector from an OSX system, you need to place the Buddy API Xtra.x32 file into the Director:Configuration:Cross Platform Resources:Windows:Xtras folder.

In both cases, you then need to change the xtrainfo.txt file in the Director\Configuration folder. Add this line to the end of the file.

[#namePPC:"Buddy API Xtra", #nameW32:"Buddy API Xtra.x32"]

Note that if you have renamed the xtra file names, make sure that you change the names in the above line.

Note that you do not have to do the above steps if you do not intend to embed the xtra in the projector. You can also make the cross-platform projector and include the xtra in a separate xtras folder.

Making cross platform projectors under Director MX 2004

Using Director MX 2004, it is possible to make Mac projectors under Windows, and vice versa.

To make a OSX projector from Windows, you need to use version 1.7 of the Macintosh version. Place the flattened copies of the Mac xtra - Buddy API OSX Xtra.rsrc and Buddy API OSX Xtra.data -  (included in the Mac download) into the Director\Configuration\Cross Platform Resources\Macintosh\Xtras folder.

To make a Windows projector from an OSX system, you need to place the Buddy API Xtra.x32 file into the Director:Configuration:Cross Platform Resources:Windows:Xtras folder.

In both cases, you then need to change the xtrainfo.txt file in the Director MX 2004\Configuration folder. Add this line to the end of the file.

[#namePPC:"Buddy API OSX Xtra", #nameW32:"budapi.x32"]

Note that if you have renamed the xtra file names, make sure that you change the names in the above line.
